» ®eUeg af (HolltQt Volume XLVIl, Number The President And All His Men By Kristie Hoffstedder It is 1988 and that means another elec tion year. But how involved are Saint Mary’s students in the election? Surprisingly not very many are registered nor are those 18 and older planning to register. Like the majority of girls, Natalie Gaskins says, “It’s just not a passing issue.” Others don’t know where to register and some just plan to register, but not vote. With the recent scan dal involving presidential candidate Gary Hart and modei Donna Rice, it is clear American politics do not look good. Other factors have set the nation in an uproar. These included the Iran contra affair, the national debt at an all-time high, and the conflict over the unsuccessful nomination of Robert Bork to the Supreme Court. Con gressman David Price visited Saint Mary’s campus on February 8, 1988. He spoke of the decline in voters over the past two dec ades. In the ’60s voting at age 21 seemed unfair and many people fought to lower that age to 18. The year after the age require ment was changed to 18, approximately 61% of the population voted in the presi dential election. The 1984 election saw a dramatic drop to only 51 % of the population voting. Many students believe others will vote and feel their votes would not make a substantial difference. At the present time' Congress is com posed with a majority of Democrats. There are those who await to see if a Democraticc President will succeed Republican Ronald Reagan. Political science teacher Dr. Caro lyn Happer believes it could go either way. She also expressed a hope that the young voters of Saint Mary’s would see the impor tance of voting. If the issues don’t appeal to younger voters she is afraid they will not make a point to vote. With election day only ten months away students need to realize the reality of the old phrase “every vote counts” and make it a point to register and vote. In a society where the people elect their leaders and lawmakers it is essential that we vote to preserve our morals and beliefs. You can register to vote at the public library at Cameron Village or the Raleigh Board of Elections (339 South Salisbury Street). If you have any questions on reg istration, call The Board of Elections at 755- 6570. The Spring Break Trip By Lisa Morris It seems like just yesterday that Saint Mary’s girls were preparing for first semes ter exams, and now it is time for spring break. Time sure does fly!!! There are five lucky Saint Mary’s stu dents who will surely have an exciting break. They will not only be traveling a long distance for one wonderful week but also (your teachers will love this) receiving an educational experience. After their last class on March 4, the girls and Mr. Tate are leaving for London, Eng land, and staying until the following Sun day. Not many teachers here at Saint Mary’s are willing to spend their spring break with students. Mr. Tate, however, has been taking students to New York or England during spring break for about the last twenty-five years. Mr. Tate and the girls will do the tradi tional sightseeing and visit places such as The Tower of London, Windsor Castle, The British Museum, The Tate Gallery, and The National Gallery. They will also, of course, go shopping at Harrods — a huge depart ment store — and at Knights Bridge. While in London the group will see the musical “Les Miser“bles” and one of the biggest hits in New York, “Phantom of the Opera.” At night, while the girls are at night clubs. What will Mr. Tate be doing, you ask? Well, he is looking forward to spending his even ings relaxing in the theaters. “London is a fascinating city, especially for young girls. They feel they are safer in London then in big cities such as New York or Chicago,” said Mr. Tate when asked why he chose to take them to London. He also stated that he thought Saint Mary’s stu dents deserved a spring break that would promise them a great time, and England would not only do that but will also provide a learning experience along the way. I am sorry to say that this trip is already booked up; however, Mr. Tate is going back again this summer for seven weeks, and there is still room left for those who would like to go. You will not only see England, but Amsterdam and Paris, and you will re ceive academicc credit. Well, for those of us who aren’t as lucky as the girls going with Mr. Tate this spring break, have a good time anyway and re member, once we all return back to school we only have about seven weeks and we are out for the summer!!!
